Strawberry Ice Cream and Nutella-Filled Matcha Taiyaki

You’ve probably seen pop-up shops selling little cake fishies filled to the brim with ice cream, sprinkles, and cereal. If you haven’t see the shops, you’ve for sure seen beautiful posts all over instagram. The Japanese snack taiyaki has taken over as the next big dessert trend–but in Japan they’re not filled with over the top colors and flavors–they’re simply filled with a single filling, usually red bean. They’re basically little filled pancakes, just fish-shaped.

Now that we’re all stuck at home I’ve been craving all my favorite things and what better time to try and recreate them. Luckily for Christmas I had asked my “secret Santa” (most likely my brother) for an electric taiyaki maker I’d seen on amazon, and it wasn’t until quarantine that I had the time to take it out of the box.

It works as simply as a waffle maker, so you can use pre-made pancake mix if you like and fill it to your heart’s content. I added some matcha to the batter but feel free to leave it out. you can fill them with anything you want, to these I added a spoonful of Nutella, strawberry ice cream, and topped it off with Pocky. I even filled one with Dalgona Coffee, I’ll use anything as a vehicle for coffee.

This maker makes quick and easy taiyaki, and it’s so fun to use! Leave them unfilled for a portable pancake breakfast, or think of ways to make it an over the top treat!
